Lucy Szajnuk Update: No solid answers for infection and fever

Gina Szajnuk: Lucy’s blood and urine cultures came back negative today. We will not have a solid diagnoses for her 31,000 white blood cell count or her fever of 106 degrees over the last three days. Most likely, it’s a virus that they do not test for at this time.

They are keeping her hydrated and switching between Motrin and Tylenol. She seems to be comfortable right now.

With Lucy’s autonomic neuropathy, when she gets sick it is amplified. The last time she was sick like this she was hospitalized for a week in infectious diseases. She ended up having strep throat, a ruptured eardrum and three other viruses that eventually showed up on her blood culture. We were hoping for an answer from the cultures today.  Unfortunately, it will not be the case. We are used to not having answers but it’s still very frustrating and scary. Lucy’s anxiety is off the charts again now. Whenever someone walks in the room, she screams at the top of her lungs, “What are you going to do to me doctor?!”

They are going to watch her for the day and we should be able to go home tonight.

Between Ava’s scope last Thursday, which showed her EOE is back again, and staying in the hospital last night, we hope to enjoy a night at home before we have to bring Ava back for her yearly MRI tomorrow afternoon. When will it ever calm down?

Thank you for your continued support, love and prayers.

Much love,

Gina
