Below you will hear directly from a family affected by Glycogen Storage Disease, who benefited from Miracle Flights.
KENNETH’S STORY:
Kenneth is an eight-year-old boy. He is a very loving, generous, and strong boy, and by strong I don’t mean physically strong. Kenny was diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD) as a one-year-old baby. GSD is a disease where the liver stores sugar instead of processing it. GSD is a rare disease, affecting only 1 in 100,000 births. GSD causes defects in the processing of glycogen and the breakdown of glycogen within muscles, the liver, and other cells. Kenneth is strong in the sense that he has had a very different childhood than most. He spent his life in and out of hospitals. He needs to have his blood monitored constantly, and must adhere to a strict diet. He must also watch other kids enjoy sugars and sweets that would kill him. With all that he endures, he still has a smile to give. That’s strong to me. We are a family of seven. Kenny has both his parents that love and adore him, along with two older sisters, one younger sister, and one younger brother that love him as well. The constant monitoring of his blood sugar, keystones, and proper care for Kenny has forced us to become a one-income family. Kenny’s GSD program used to be located in Florida, so we were able to get him back and forth for his appointments when needed. With the sudden move of the GSD program from Florida to Connecticut, we were unable to financially plan for long distance travel to Connecticut in order for Kenny to see his specialist. This is why we reached out to Miracle Flights; to get Kenny to his appointment in Connecticut to see his specialist doctor. Miracle Flights provided financial assistance for Kenny to fly to Connecticut for treatment and they will continue to fly him as many times as needed. For the time being, Kenny is back at home with his family, being a little boy.
Thank you Miracle Flights.
